Choosing a Tucson Wedding Photographer: What Couples Should be Considering (an in depth view from a professional documentary wedding photographer)

Question 1 of 10:

What's the biggest mistake you see couples make when choosing a wedding photographer in Tucson?

Mark @ For Love With Love: First, people can often focus too much on their budget vs the specific style, quality of work, and emotional energy a photographer is capable of capturing. Budgets play a real part in the weddings people plan, so I suggest instead of placing to much emphasis on them inquire with the photographer about breaking up payments over time or see if the photographer has options that may fit the couples needs. All too often focusing too much on the cost of the photographer it leads people to hiring psomeone who can’t deliver the quality of photos and products that meet the clients wants and needs. The couples often ends up with limited coverage of their wedding day, and that can even lead the couple into a disastrous unprofessional situation where photos are simply not delivered or they are not properly captured and edited. Yes, a photographers experience and their pricing will vary, however hiring a budget photographer for a day that can't be redone often leads to disappointment with everyone.

Couples can also sometimes focus too much on a photographers contract and not the content and quality of the photographers work. Keep in mind, you are hiring and working with an artist, not someone with a legal background. A photographers contract should articulate what they will be delivering to you and a detailed payment structure and estimated timelines of what is being delivered. Focus on sharing your vision with the photographer for how your wedding will play out and allow them the freedom to create. Building trust with your photographer will provide you a greater experience come your wedding day and will allow you to focus on your wedding and remain in the moment as things unfold naturally.

Question 2 of 10:

What are the most important Tucson-specific considerations that couples rarely think about when choosing a wedding photographer?

Mark @ For Love With Love: Experienced photographers shooting in Tucson will be prepared for capturing photos in both the harsh sunlight and will be confident in navigating various locations within the city and surrounding desert landscapes. The Tucson wedding season begins in the end of September and runs through till the end of May. Most photographers and wedding venues promote their businesses throughout the Summer months, offering special deals and discounts for couples planning their special day further out. Expect the unexpected including scattered showers in October and sometimes in January too. Monsoon season is in the summer months however most photographers don't plan photo sessions outdoors during those months for the health and safety of their clients and themselves. Also photographers in Tucson will have a broad variety of locations they can suggest for couples engagements and photo sessions to include within the city, in desert locations, and in the mountains. All bring different options and depending on the time of the year can really make your photos stand out. As for venues, most photographers who have been shooting weddings for a few years in Tucson will have worked at a variety of venues throughout the city. Each venue will have its unique elements and before you book, ask your photographer for their opinions on the good, the bad, and the ugly with the venues you are considering.

Question 3 of 10:

Beyond photography style and pricing, what personal qualities should couples look for in a wedding photographer?

Mark @ For Love With Love: Couples who are hiring a wedding photographer shouldn't expect to be finding their best friend, but they should feel like they can freely ask questions and communication should flow. Weddings are a high stress environment for photographers, however an experienced photographer should be able to manage his work to include capturing key moments, organizing photos with family and guests, creating images spontaneously in new and challenging locations and lighting situations, and promptly follow through with edits that are delivered in a realistic timeframe following the wedding. You want someone who is respectful to you, your family and guests and invites more of the celebration so photos with everyone attending feels comfortable and enjoyable. Professional photographers manage bookings that reach into the next year so planning photo sessions, meetings, and anything else you may need to do with them should be communicated early on. The photographer should be able to maintain a detailed calendar of appointments and should communicate any conflicts and issues that may arise. A photographer who has a list of local vendors, venues, and other businesses within the wedding industry shows their ability to work with others and can act as another way to vet businesses you may be considering.

Question 4 of 10:

Can you share a specific wedding or engagement session that taught you an important lesson about what couples should look for in a photographer?

Mark @ For Love With Love: Keep in mind, most photographers know they aren't working with professional models. We also have found that scheduling a photo session or engagement may be the first time they have worked with a professional photographer. A good photographer will not just work with posing a couple but will provide directions to move, walk, or cary out a simple task so you won't be focused on the camera. The photographer will have many ideas, tailoring they to each client uniquely and keeping the photo session light and fun. This allows couples to be themselves and allow for candid photos to be created adding to the look and feel of an authentic moment. Photo-sessions should be fun and invite creativity and ideas to be shared between the photographer and the clients. When both the photographer and the clients have bought into an idea together something often beautiful emerges.

Question 5 of 10:

What photography styles do you think couples should understand before hiring a photographer?

Mark @ For Love With Love: Today, there is a broad variety of photography styles for weddings. Here are the most common and what you should expect from them:

  1. Traditional: Will capture the wedding as it unfolds with key moments prioritized and focusing on posed portraits, family group shots, and editing that represents the true colors of the wedding and surrounding environment.

  2. Editorial: The photographer will have a strong stylistic vision that would grace bride and wedding magazine pages that focuses on fashion, florals, and other details of the wedding with a polished and formal approach.

  3. Documentary: Candid, with a strong photojournalistic approach and focus to a wedding that allows for your wedding day story to be told in photographs. Most will also include formal portraits, and can even venture into some fine art imagery, but will also work to capture those intimate moments most photographers miss.

  4. Fine Art: Nearly all of the focus of a fine art photographer will be to create unique artistic images that lean more artistic vs traditional wedding photos. Specialty lighting, use of unique lenses, unexpected perspectives, etc can be expected with a fine art photographer.

Try to steer clear of photography trends that can be spread through social media. Unique uses of color, or stylized photos our trending ways to use lighting can often lead to dated photos 10, 15, and 20 years from now. Instead take an overall look at a photographers portfolio, emerging yourself in the overall feel and energy of the images of their clients. Photographers should have a strong representation of their work (not just their best images) in a portfolio which will include a website, and there should be a consistency within their "brand" and overall body of work. In other words, a documentary photographer will have a primary focus on documentary work that spans a few years at the least, and their work should be recognizable just to them.

A good portfolio should have examples of various aspects of a wedding, and the photographer should ensure that each photo represents their brand to include the highest quality of their work (focus and depth of field, framing of subjects, artistic ability, competent editing, use of shutter speed control (intentionally causing motion blur or using a fast enough shutter to freeze motion), use of light both in the daytime and evenings and with unique, challenging, or specialty lighting, etc.

Overall, couples should choose the photographer whose work speaks to them. You are hiring an artist and if you went into an art gallery we would be drawn to art that appeals to each of us. The same should be true for how we choose what photography we find pleasing to our eye. If you land on a photographer, book them before they become unavailable!

Question 6 of 10:

When couples are reviewing a photographer's portfolio, what specifically should they be looking for—and what red flags should they watch out for?

Mark @ For Love With Love: Couples should be looking for consistency and clarity. Consistency in the photographers overall brand and style of photography with a broad portfolio showcasing more than just handful of photos. The photos should be a real clients, not staged wedding images with models which is a huge red flag. Also most photographers will fall into a pricing range that is fairly similar for the region with little variances depending on what they are offering. Huge differences like a photographer offering coverage for an entire wedding for $250 always ends in disaster. More and more couples are asking to see full wedding galleries, however that could consist of several hundred images which is unrealistic. You should however see samples of photos throughout an entire wedding in a photographers portfolio. Strong portfolios will showcase the photographers ability to work in various lighting conditions and environments. It will also reveal their artistic vision and overall feel of their clients energy. Authentic energy can't be faked in photographs and you will feel it when something feels staged. Pricing pages should be transparent with everything clearly stated. No pricing or vague approximations reveals a lack of confidence and a photographer who knows their work may not match the value of what they are selling. Last, look for real client reviews which can also sometimes be found on the photographers google business page or similar sites. Confident photographers will want to build trust with new clients and if they have an unhappy client, look for how professional they were in resolving any and all issues. Most importantly, strong photographers are strong both artistically and technically. Their work should be consistent in their quality and artistic vision wedding to wedding. You shouldn't have a difficult time seeing their brand and style in each and every wedding they share. Last, is the photographer only showcasing posed photos or are they well versed in capturing those fractional moments that are critical and challenging to make happen? Keep in mind, your wedding won't consist of you posing for every moment. A strong photographer will know how to navigate your wedding and will surprise you with photos you couldn't have imagined and that are memorable. If I were putting together a personal checklist to help a family member to choose a wedding photograph in Tucson this is what I would list: 1. Do they have a google business page that clearly showcases their work, business hours, has a link to their website, and has current photos and reviews? Are they actively making updates to their page? 2. Is their website informative or are you left with more questions that you simply can't find? IS their pricing, package offers, etc clear? 3. Are there examples of quality photos from both the daytime and evening represented? 4. is there an easy way to reach the photographer via photons, email, or contact page? Do they respond promptly or do they never get back to you? 5. What style of photography speaks to you and how you want your special day documented? What is most important to you and the overall kind of photos you want delivered to you? 6. Is their pricing competitive and matching the quality of their work and other similar photographers? 7. Does the photographer schedule a sit down with the couple to go over the details of their wedding and to ensure they are a god fit for the couple? 8. Does the photographer work within a contract. Money is being exchanged for a service and all work should be done with a contract detailing the services to be delivered. 9. What do client reviews reveal? Are people happy with the services the photographer delivered?

Question 7 of 10:

What questions do you wish more couples would ask photographers before booking them?

Mark @ For Love With Love: I wish clients would ask more questions about how the photographer developed their business and why. I've come across many wedding photographers who hate shooting weddings and I personally would never hire someone like that knowing they were not passionate about their work. I would also ask about moments they can recall about specific challenging weddings (weather, lighting, and really anything unexpected) that they managed to overcome and creatively push through. Have them show photo examples of those moments and this will show their character, and how even in challenging situations they have the confidence, expertise, skills and wisdom to get them through anything they are confronted with. No client should worry about their photographer. Within a photographers contract there should be something about the delivery and timeframes of receiving final photos. If the timeline exceeds their estimation I would expect to have the photographer communicate any and all delays to their clients promptly. Delays happen, and some things are simply unpredictable, but good, strong communication provides confidence and is a must. If a couple had only one consultation call with a photographer I would expect that they would not say "yes" to everything. Photographers should have boundaries and that shows good control over their business and brand. You want to hire a wedding photographer that doesn't over extend themselves by shooting sports, race cars, little league games, family portraits etc. Their focus should be weddings and couples and a person who lives and breathes there and has that focus is going to be one powerful photographer.

Question 8 of 10:

What does a well-run wedding photography process look like from booking to final delivery?

Mark @ For Love With Love: I'll keep it simple: 1. initial inquiry that provides a quick response (they want your business), 2. Sit down consultation, 3. contract completion and a retainer from the client, 4. engagement session (if included with the wedding), 5. Delivery of engagement photos, 6. Communication with the clients and photographer about timelines and the overall wedding day plans, 7. Finalization of photography installments, 8. wedding walkthrough prior to the wedding, 9. Wedding day initial meeting with clients and then shooting begins, 10. Sneak peeks- 10-20 photos so clients may begin sharing photos with friends and family within 24 hours of the conclusion of the wedding, 11. Delivery of wedding photos (digital and or prints), 12. The beginning of work on any wedding photo books, 13. Communication with clients on wedding books to include vows and other info to be included, 14. Wedding photo book sent to printer., 15. Communication with clients on delays or delivery timeline of wedding photobook. 16. Physical hand-off and informal meeting with clients and photographer so wedding photo book is turned over to the couple. 17. Photographer asks clients to submit a review on google. 18. Photographer sends thank you note to clients.

Question 9 of 10:

How should couples think about pricing for wedding photography in Tucson?

Mark @ For Love With Love: Pricing can be very subjective, but then within a geographic region there should be a bit of similarity photographer to photographer based on their abilities and overall experience. A photographers experience (technical and artistic) will be the strongest point in determining their pricing. A photographer who consistently delivers strong and high quality work will be in greater demand, and they should have a higher pricing than other photographers. There are always going to be hundreds of good, competent photographers in cities, but what sets the strong photographer apart from them is their overall quality product(s) they deliver. First, I would suggest couples determine what style of photography they like, then begin searches on Google and the internet for that specific style of photographer. Bridal events within your city can also provide you face to face with photographers who can also show you their work and communicate their overall vision for how they can document your wedding day. Pricing within Tucson can range between $200/hr to $1000/hr with an average of $350-$450/hr. The most common photographer in Tucson would fall into the "Traditional" wedding photographer with "Fine Art" and "Documentary" photographers being less common, but in very high demand. Keep in mind, Fine art and Documentary photographers working in the wedding industry is fairly uncommon so those photographers can often be heavily booked with their popular style of work. 2nd photographers are also often an option for larger weddings and pricing can vary from $25/hr to $250/hr. Overall expect to be paying somewhere around $1600+ for a small wedding and $2400+ to $6000 for larger weddings for a photographer in Tucson. At For Love With Love photography I include a free (1) hour engagement session with every wedding booked with me, but not every business offer this. Travel within the city is typically not charged to the clients however travel to other cities, states, or outside of the country expect the photographer has special rates that will be included. Beware of Craigslist photographers advertising $200 wedding photography services. If it's too good to be true, it's too good to be true. Professional photographers will be invested in a website and other features to showcase their work and most will be on social media platforms, google business, and other places where they can advertise and get their work out to the public. Yes, you can find inexpensive photographers who are just starting their business and working in building their portfolio, however if their work just doesn't fit the overall quality and look you want for your wedding be prepared to keep searching. Yes, there are gifted photographers who are just beginning their business, but that's rare and most people spend years honing their skills. This will show though in a photographers portfolio so don't get trapped by amazing pricing. Stay focused on quality photography that showcases the photographers skills to include consistency and artistic abilities. Last, beware of inexpensive photo books and add-on accessories sold by photographers. Quality books come with a cost so don't expect high quality photo prints for the price fo a book you can buy off the shelf at a store. Quality wedding photo books often range between $1000 and $2000 with photographic fine art print quality with archival paper and hard back custom book bindings. Sometimes combining the hourly work and a wedding book as a "Package" can provide you discounts through the photographer so check for that on their website and ask at your meetings with them.

Question 10 of 10:

What are the most common misconceptions couples have about wedding photography in Tucson?

Mark @ For Love With Love: Not all photographers are built the same and this has little to nothing to do with what camera brands they shoot with. I've shot with Nikon, Sony, And Canon and my work is consistent with all of these camera brands. I challenge anyone to point out what photos were shot with each brand...you won't be able to tell. Why? Cameras are tools and I have become an expert at utilizing my tools. The specific style of wedding photography photographers shoot is determined by their person eye, their business choices, the style of photography they feel comfortable shooting, and their technical abilities, and their artistic vision and capabilities. How much a photographer shoots at a wedding and how they cull down their final photos to edit and how they edit, and how much work they re actively shooting and editing also determines when clients will receive their final photos. This will also be dependent on the average length of time photo book companies can turn a printed book around as well. Normal individual photo edits may take 10-30 seconds to complete while others could take several minutes or even over an hour depending on the detail of the edit work needed. Now multiply that by a few hundred photos and a photographer could take up to 2 months to get your photos completed. The edit process (to be transparent) includes importing the RAW/digital negatives into a photo editing software, making color, light, contrast, cropping, and other adjustments in order to create a finalized digital photo. The process takes time as each photo will require some attention to bring it to what the photographer feels represents their quality of their brand. The final photos are then uploaded to a web viewer or downloaded to a memory device which can be used to deliver the final photos to clients.
