I’ve had some conversations with new clients recently and one stood out and I felt this needed to be added to the blog.
“Why document activities before the wedding?” Because the wedding isn’t the beginning of your story; it’s the result of it. Documenting the days, habits, and in-between moments leading up to your wedding builds emotional momentum, giving meaning and depth to the celebration itself instead of letting it exist as a single, disconnected highlight. When you capture the journey, not just the milestone, you preserve the energy, context, and feeling that make the wedding matter in the first place.

“We want to hire you for our wedding but we just want you to start shooting at the beginning of the ceremony” a potential client stated. For the next few minutes I shared my thoughts on this with them and why I thought it was a mistake to have the photographer begin shooting there.

Imagine going to a movie, but missing the first 20 minutes. The build up, the momentum would be lost right? By capturing the beginning of a wedding ceremony but leaving out all of the intimate details and care that preceded the ceremony I the photographer gives a glimpse behind the scenes of the enormity of what it took to prepare for such an event and its importance. From everyone getting ready, the bridesmaids hair being curled and styled, the groomsmen helping each other with their ties and the grooms father pinning the boutonniere on his son and making sure it’s straight, the bride being assisted with the little buttons that impossibly run down her detailed dress, and everyone figuring out where the vail should be placed in her hair. Finally, the tables being set, and flower arrangements being determined to go here and there with seating arrangements marked with carefully designed, elegant card placements, and much much more.

If you simply seek a photographer to capture your wedding ceremony, there are people who will do that. However if you wanted to tell the story of your wedding day, how would that look? What lead up to the ceremony, and what did that look like? Who was there in the rooms with you that simply had to be there? Because, the ceremony may be the culmination of all you planned and put together, but the people who you chose to be there supporting it all are the foundation that held it all up.

Tell the complete story. Tell it like it unfolded; the chaos, the excitement, the craziness of it all, the little moments you can’t expect but the photographer with the fast eye and his head on a swivel managed to capture in that fractional second. A memory, one moment you would have likely forgotten in all of the mess of things if it were not for documenting these moments that will never happen again.
