Why I Don't Provide RAW Photo Negatives to Clients / by For Love With Love

Mark Peterson | Photographer | For Love With Love Photography

As a professional photographer, I often get asked if clients can receive the RAW photo files, the digital negatives of their session. The short answer is: no, I do not provide RAW files to clients, and here’s why.

All RAW negatives remain the sole property of Mark Peterson and For Love With Love. These files represent the unprocessed, untouched data straight from the camera. Think of them as the digital equivalent of undeveloped film; they are not the finished product. Each selected RAW file undergoes a comprehensive editing process, where careful adjustments, corrections, and artistic enhancements are applied to transform the image into the final photograph you see and love.

What Are RAW Files, Really?

RAW files are large, uncompressed images that contain all the data captured by the camera sensor. Unlike JPEGs, they are not ready-to-use images. They appear flat, lack contrast, and often have muted colors, because they are meant to be edited. To even view or process a RAW file, you need specialized software like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop, and more importantly, the training to use those tools effectively.

Editing is Part of the Art

The editing process is not just about tweaking exposure or adjusting white balance. It’s where the creative vision comes to life. It’s where I shape the mood, tone, and feel of each image to match the narrative and emotion of the shoot. This phase is an essential part of my artistry and what distinguishes my brand, For Love With Love, from others.

Just as a painter wouldn’t hand over a sketchbook of incomplete drawings, or a chef wouldn’t serve the raw ingredients of a meal, photographers don’t distribute RAW files. Doing so would be handing over an unfinished product; one that does not represent the level of quality, intention, or artistic integrity I stand for.

Brand Integrity and Creative Control

Maintaining the RAW files also allows me to protect the visual identity of my work. Each image I deliver reflects the values, style, and emotional tone that define my brand. Allowing unedited versions of my work to circulate could lead to misrepresentation, whether through poor editing by others or misunderstanding of what the final product should look like.

Like many artists, I believe in preserving the integrity of the work I put into the world. That means curating the final product with care and intention; something that cannot be done if RAW files are distributed without context or creative input.

In Closing

Your photographs are more than just snapshots; they are part of a crafted visual story. By trusting your photographer to deliver fully edited, high-quality images, you’re not just receiving pictures; you’re receiving art. And like all art, it deserves to be seen in its finished form, not halfway through the process.

Thank you for trusting me to tell your story with care, vision, and professionalism.
